At any given time, only about 10-15% of your scalp hair is in the resting (telogen) phase — the rest is actively growing.

Telogen Effluvium happens when a significant physical or emotional stressor pushes a much larger percentage of hair follicles into the resting phase all at once. Common triggers include:

  • High stress or emotional shock (work pressure, grief, major life events)
  • Prolonged fasting or crash dieting — sudden calorie or protein restriction signals the body to conserve resources, and hair growth is one of the first things it deprioritizes
